Emergency Or Disaster Preparedness Means Having Information at the Ready

As anyone can tell you these days an emergency can happen at any time and any place. Remember hurricane Katrina? What about all of those other floods that have happened all over the country in this last year? Yes, emergencies and disasters can happen at any time and in any place. It is a good idea to have an emergency preparedness action plan in place at home and all members of the home should know what to do and where to go in case such an emergency occurs. So you put a kit together and you make sure that you have enough food and water and medical supplies as well as clothes and shelter as well as any other form of preparedness you can think of.

One of the most important things to consider in an emergency or disaster is what happens after the emergency has passed? What just happened? Where did that come from? When will the cavalry arrive? What is going on in other places? These are all questions that go through your head after the disaster or emergency has passed. Well how does one go about finding out the answers to all of those questions? Well, not by asking the guy next door because chances are that person knows about as much as your do!

In the aftermath of any type of disaster or emergency you are going to need information as to what happened and what is going to happen. You might not have basic services after an emergency so the television might not be working. Heck!, your television might not even be in the house anymore. One of the most important aspects of any emergency preparedness plan is to have a radio at the ready.

It is advisable to obtain an American Red Cross approved emergency radio that picks up AM/FM and the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) weather band. You do not need to store batteries for this type of radio as they come with a hand crank generator for power. This type of radio also comes equipped with an LED light source and many models have cell phone charging adapters in them as well. In most cases cranking on the generator of this type of radio for two minutes will provide your with an hour of power. If basic services are still functioning in your area you can also use a standard AC outlet to power the radio and if you just happen to have AA batteries laying around you can use them in this type of radio as well. This is a very flexible piece of gear to have in any emergency preparedness kit or action plan for the home.

With this type of radio you can and will always know what is happening in your area or any other area for that matter. Being informed just after a disaster keeps you ahead of the curve and in many cases it keeps you alive. Remember information is king. If you don't already have an emergency disaster preparedness plan in your home it is about high time you thought about having one and don't forget that your need to stay informed when emergencies arise.

I know that this is not the most satisfying of subject matter to consider, yet everyone must consider it as a vital part of being prepared and in control of your safety. To learn more visit How To Create A Family Disaster Plan
