A car’s air conditioning system functions to provide cool air to the interior of a car during hot, summer months. Having an air conditioning system makes a rather unpleasant summer drive more comfortable and bearable. The transfer of hot air and cool air, a process called air conditioning, occurs as a closed loop exchange system involving the ac compressor, ac condenser, ac receiver drier, expansion valve and evaporator.





The ac compressor compresses cool, low – pressure refrigerant liquid into hot, high – pressure refrigerant gas. The refrigerant gas moves onto the condenser where heat from the refrigerant gas is absorbed. Once heat is absorbed, the refrigerant gas is “condensed” into refrigerant liquid. The refrigerant liquid then passes onto the ac receiver drier. The ac receiver drier plays a vital role in the ac system, but more on that later. After the ac receiver drier, the refrigerant liquid passes through the expansion valve where liquid refrigerant is converted into refrigerant gas (again). After this, the refrigerant gas moves on to the evaporator. A fan located inside the evaporator blows the refrigerant gas onto the air conditioning vents located inside the car. Once the refrigerant gas enters the car’s interior, the heat from the air within the car is absorbed. The end result is a cooler and more comfortable air for the occupants of the car.





Notice that the description about the ac receiver drier has been left out in the first paragraph. It is fitting that another paragraph be dedicated to this important component of the air conditioning system. The ac receiver drier does the job of filtering out contaminants and absorbing moisture from the refrigerant liquid. By doing so it protects the other areas in the air conditioning system from being contaminated with dust, dirt or moisture. The ac receiver drier looks like a radiator overflow tank and is often a cylindrical contraption with a small window in it. The small window in the ac receiver drier allows one to check the AC status. When the air conditioning system is working, one should be able to see clear liquid inside the ac receiver drier. If the liquid is milky, then there is water in the system. If the liquid has bubbles, then there is a presence of air in the system. When this happens, the car’s air conditioning system must soon be checked by a qualified mechanic. Chances are the ac receiver drier needs some replacing.

Then the AC condenser converts the high pressure refrigerant vapor into liquid. The liquid that moves onto the receiver-drier is stored there. While in the receiver- drier, moisture is removed from the refrigerator liquid. The removal of moisture from the refrigerator liquid is an important step in the AC process because the removal of moisture means that risk of the refrigerator liquid freezing and consequently blocking the passageway for air conditioning vapors is considerably reduced, if not precisely eliminated. After the receiver-drier, the refrigerator fluid moves to the thermostatic expansion valve where it expands and becomes refrigerant vapor. The refrigerant vapor is briefly stored in the evaporator before it is released into the air conditioning vents found inside the car. Once released, the refrigerant vapor vaporizes the air inside the car and absorbs heat from the inside of the vehicle. The end result is cool air that makes the interior of the car more comfortable for its passengers.





Notice that the AC compressor is at the heart of the air conditioning process. Without the AC compressor, none of the refrigerant transfer processes would have been possible. That’s why it is important to ensure that the AC Condenser is always working properly. When the air conditioning system produces air that is not cool or insufficiently cool, a checkup and replacement of the needed AC part/s is/are due. It is advisable to have the AC repairs done by a registered mechanic because changing AC parts is often tricky and complicated. Car Audio speakers Overview

The car audio you use will have the definitive say in how your system will sound. There are many different types of speakers available. A single speaker can be used to reproduce the full range of sounds but it is not ideal. If the speaker is too large it will have problems reproducing high frequencies which require rapid movement of the speaker. If it is too small it will have problems reproducing low frequencies which require large amounts of air to be moved. Because a single speaker cannot reproduce all sounds accurately numerous speakers are used each of which duplicates sound in the frequency range it was designed for. A speaker called a tweeter reproduces high frequencies generally above 2 kHz.

Tweeters are small and lightweight so they can respond rapidly. Very little power is required for powering tweeters because they are very efficient. Woofers are the exact opposite because they usually require large amounts of power to really move air. Woofers are meant to produce sound at frequencies below 250 Hz and often just below 100 Hz (in the case of subwoofers). Because a woofer must move considerable amounts of air they are usually large with typical sizes of 10", 12", 15" and even 18"! On the other hand tweeters are usually very small ranging in size from 1/2" to 2" in size. Typically, tweeters larger than 1" in size cannot respond quickly enough to sound good and are too directional. In between are midrange speakers which handle the frequencies between the woofers and tweeters. Further separation can be done but is usually inessential and just complicates the crossover which must separate the full audio signal into multiple parts for each speaker.

Things to look for:
Power Handling: Just as with amplifiers, RMS or continuous power is critical here. Some manufacturers will declare very high power handling figures but they are usually for very short peaks only. Granted music is not continuous but the continuous power handling gives you a much better impression of how much power a speaker can really handle. For tweeters and midranges, power handling is not as important since it does not take much power for them to play loudly. For woofers though a rough match should be made between the woofer and the amp driving it.

Sensitivity: This is a very important spec for a speaker. It gives you an idea of how loud a speaker will play given a certain input power. If a speaker is insensitive then it will require more power to play at the same volume level than a speaker that is more responsive. Figures between 85 dB and 95 dB at 1 watt RMS at 1 meter are general. If you use anything outside of this range you may have problems matching the output levels of the speakers relative to each other. If you're going to run speakers off of a head unit then try to get speakers with higher input sensitivities since head units normally do not have much power.

Physical Size: You must pay attention to the size of the speakers you choose. Tweeters are very small but need to mounted where they fire nearly directly at you or they may not be heard properly. Some tweeters have better off axis response than others. If you will not be on axis with the tweeter when you audition tweeters in a store listen to how their sound variates as you move around them to see if they will work in your car. Midranges should fit in the door or dash spaces provided or you will have to do some cutting or fabrication. In general the bigger the woofer the larger the enclosure required to hold it. Some woofers are better optimized for little enclosures than others (Kicker Solobaric, JL Audio W6 for example). Make sure you have enough room in your trunk or hatchback for the woofer. Kickpanels for midranges and tweeters or coaxials typically offer superior imaging than locations in the door however the soundstage is sometimes lower than when you have the tweeters mounted high in the doors or on the A pillars.

How Do Car Audio Speakers Work?
Moving Speaker Speakers are air pistons that move back (on the negative cycle of the signal) and forth (on the positive cycle), creating different degrees of air pressure at different frequencies. The amplifier (either separate or built-in your radio), produces electrical impulses that alternate from positive and negative voltages (AC). This current reaches the voice coil inside the speaker, forming an electro-magnet that will either be repelled, or attracted by the fixed magnet at the bottom of the speaker. The voice coil is joined to the cone, moving it back and forth, creating sound. The surround (rubbery circle that joins top of the cone and metal basket) and the spider (usually yellow corrugated circle joining bottom of cone to magnet) make the cone return to its original position.

Body repair is another story and can become very expensive. Newer cars with plastic and fiberglass bodies are almost impossible to repair, the body panels are often much easier to just replace, and that can be accomplished by almost anyone with a wrench and screw driver. Repairing dents and rust on metal bodies can be time consuming as well as expensive. It also requires a matching paint job which is similarly expensive. If the dented or rusted panels can be removed it makes it much easier. Dents can be pounded back into shape. In addition to this, it is often just easier to work on and paint a detached piece. Some work can be done by the average Joe, but extensive body work should be done at an established body shop.

While automakers are getting help from the government, dealers are not. They simply don't employee enough people nor do they have the lobbying clout that manufacturers do. If automakers have it tough, dealers are absolutely being crushed. Estimates indicate one out of ever two may close before this is over. That is a staggering percentage.

Any new car comes with a warranty and maintenance plan. Essentially, both of these are free for a specified time or number of miles. It is a great deal, but you have to get the work done at your dealer. This raises the rather odd question of what happens if the dealer closes the door and no longer exists?!

The answer to this quandary is actually fairly simple. You do not have to take your car to the dealer you purchased it from. You can take it to another dealer for the brand. Since there are usually multiple dealers for each brand in the area, it shouldn't be a big problem to switch over. You will not be the only customer in need.

What if the only dealer in your area closes? You can usually take it any dealer in the area for the automaker regardless of brand. For instance, GM owns the Chevrolet and Pontiac brands. If your Pontiac dealer closes, you can take it to a Chevrolet dealer and so on.

Okay, what if there are no dealers from the automaker in the area at all? At this point, you have to call the automaker to get directions on their policy in such situation. Each automaker has a unique policy. Make sure they send you directions in writing so there aren't any disputes later.

"After some consideration, I think I'll choose the Modern Home No. 146. The Saratoga has a lovely wide front porch and the redwood siding should endure for many decades."

This was, perhaps, the thinking of thousands of families who bought their homes from the Sears Roebuck Houses by Mail Catalog - a phenomenon of the early 20th century that delivered kit homes stacked onto rail cars to families across America. Between 1908 and 1940 about 100,000 families perused the architectural catalog, read concise descriptions of house styles and analyzed floor plans. Then, according to their family budget and needs, placed a stamp on an envelope and sent off for a complete kit to build their home from foundation to roof top.

Sometimes, the buyer would take on the task of building the home while others hired local contractors. Thousands of these homes still stand today, their owners perhaps unaware their bungalow, cottage, colonial house or other older home was assembled from a kit. The cost? A home kit could be purchased for a under $1,000 and up to about $2,700, depending upon the design and square footage. Today, many of those same homes sell for a half million dollars or more.

Although Sears Roebuck Company was the most successful retailer of home kits, it was not alone. A major competitor in the market was, not surprisingly, Montgomery Ward. But it was Sears that captured the majority of sales and left a lasting mark on real estate across America. Some analysts say it was the company's attention to detail and quality that kept it in front of its competitors. In 1918, a Sears' marketing piece promised "the customer must be satisfied for a lifetime for every house we sell is a standing advertisement for Sears Roebuck and Company."

Part of this satisfaction came with the efficient way the Sears kits were assembled and presented. In the early 1900s, carpenters and home builders did not have the advantage of today's power tools. Most people were not educated in reading architectural plans, nor experienced in construction. Sears pre-cut all the lumber for the homes and made instructions easy to follow. Since most buyers were intimately involved in the construction of their kit home, there was a special pride in hands-on ownership.

After the Great Depression, Sears offered an even more complete package to customers by including financing. By then, the company was deep into lumber mills and other industries that supported its housing venture. By 1940, the burden of manufacturing and financing - and the impact of WWII - saw the last of the Book of Modern Homes. Times changed and Sear Roebuck changed with them. The company never kept an inventory of the homes it sold so many people who own houses from the early decades of the 20th century may be unaware of their home's humble, mail order origin.

    The Gibson SG, launched in 1961, was originally a refined version of the Les Paul model, and was going to take that name, although the guitar’s designer, legendary blues guitarist Les Paul- after whom the guitar is named- disliked the shape and refused to have it associated with him.

    Gibson decided to continue making the old Les Paul and to rename the new guitar the SG, which stands for Solid Guitar. The Les Paul has been continually made since 1952 and is still sold. The SG was launched to compete with Fender’s Stratocaster, the guitar Gibson had tried to take on in 1958 with the initially very unsuccessful Modernistic series- the Explorer, Flying V and Moderne.

The body was always mahogany, as was the neck. The fingerboard was ebony or rosewood. The SG was marketed as having the fastest neck in the world as it was almost separate from the body and had a very slim profile.

    The pickup options were one, two or three humbuckers, or one or two P-90s. Most did not have the optional vibrato systems, although some had Gibson-designed units. A rare feature is the Gibson-designed sideways vibrato, in which the notes were distorted by the player moving the arm from side to side, instead of up and down. This was short lived.

    When the SG was launched the main models available were the Standard, the Junior and the Custom. The SG Standard had the truss rod cover from a Les Paul and the “batwing” shaped scratchplate. It was revised in 1966 and was fitted with a larger scratchplate and different neck joint. The SG Junior was similar to the Les Paul Junior in concept- a cheaper version of the SG, while retaining the shape. The SG Custom was the range-topping model.

    Some famous SG players include Angus Young of AC/DC, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath and Elliot Easton of the Cars, (all of whom had signature models dedicated to them), Eric Clapton, (whose SG was hand-painted in a psychedelic pattern by Dutch art group The Fool) and Pete Townshend of The Who. Although not a regular user, Carlos Santana also played an SG at the Woodstock festival.

    The shape of the SG originates from the 1961-63 Gibson SG/Les Paul Junior. This model, a version of the Les Paul Junior (a cheaper version of the Les Paul), had the same body shape as the SG would later have, but with the Les Paul Junior scratchplate. This model is not to be confused with the SG Junior.

    Although Les Paul disapproved of the SG shape and refused for the guitar to have his name on it, on the Custom models his signature could be found above the neck pickup until 1963.

    Models available at the time of writing are the Standard, Custom, Special, Angus Young Signature, 1961 Reissue and Vintage Original Series models. Also, the double neck Gibson EDS-1275 famously used by Jimmy Page is based on the SG. Although the SG has always been somewhat in the shadow of the Les Paul, it has achieved star status in the hands of several talented players.

    may never forgive iGo for forsaking my absolutely favorite peripheral, the Stowaway Bluetooth Keyboard, and I hope they rethink their abandonment or that another company picks it up and perpetuates this great product.

    However, that's not what we're here to talk about today. So, let's shift to the newly released iGo everywhere85. I must admit that at first I was confused and just assumed that it was a battery type charger; it soon became apparent that it was not a charger at all but a super-duper power source. I scratched my head and wondered why it wasn't a charger and why they would bother to produce a power source when every device comes with its own anyway.

    Then it dawned on me that this was not your ordinary power source. This little beauty plugs into just about anything that you can grab power from including AC wall outlets in countries all over the world, airplanes, cars, boats, and RVs. About the only source missing is perhaps solar and wind power.
    The name of the game is adapters for input and output, and iGo has a panoply of adapters available from its Website. The unit comes with eight popular adapters. You can look up the tips available here: http://www.igo.com/selectorIGOSOL.asp.

    I was surprised however, at the narrow range of camera adapters available. Clearly it had many popular brands such as Kodak, Sony, HP, Nikon, and Samsung. But what about Pentax, Olympus, and Cassio, for example. The list is much more comprehensive for Bluetooth devices. I found the list long for PDAs and phones, but with many missing.

    If you cannot find the correct tip for your product, let iGo know, and it will attempt to find one that is compatible or add it to their list.

    To further recommend this power outputter, it will act as a dual power supply so that you can charge your laptop and PDA, camera, other accessory at the same time, which makes it all the more attractive.
    The unit itself measures 4.8 x 2.7 x 0.9 inches and weighs eight ounces. However, by the time you put it together with all the peripherals including tips, cables, and stuffed it in its carrying case, you've bumped the weight up to two pounds. A nice zipper black nylon carrying case comes with it by the way.
    It seems a bit pricey at $129.99, but I can imagine that there are occasions that you would pay almost anything for the services that this handy power supply offers.

    You can grab one from www.igo.com. They must be popular though because I noticed that they were temporarily out of stock when I visited their site a moment ago.

    If you are in need of a portable power supply, iGo has that for you as well with its powerXtender battery-operated charger that requires two AA batteries for only $15.99. They claim it will give you up to 10 hours of talking, 210 hours of playing, and 28 hours of listening.

    Bimini - Atlantis Found?

    Edgar Cayce, the "sleeping prophet,"(who had helped some 14,000 people with physical problems, and past life issues) spoke of the "Hall of Records" buried three places on Earth. These records were the history of humankind on our planet. One record was buried under the paw of the Sphinx in Egypt. Another in the Yucatan Peninsula, and the third record buried with Atlantis when it sank under the sea. He spoke of Atlantis as being under the water in area of the Bermuda Triangle. The island of Bimini was supposed to be the highest peak of the mountain of Atlantis that never sunk. There were at least three sinkings of the Continent of Atlantis. After the first two sinkings those who stayed had to be the most stubborn, not in touch with reality folks, who just would not leave.

    We set out very early AM from West Palm Beach, Florida on our journey. Chris has brought her eight year old son, and another female friend Henna. My motto has always been, "I come prepared." even though I was never a girl scout. So with much extra food in hand, we arrived at the seaplane airport in Ft. Lauderdale. I brought my sweater for the AC. The seaplane was a little 6 to 8 seater. As we took off I watched a 12 inch fan mounted on the bulkhead of the plane on an artistic rendering of fish in the sea. So much for my sweater and AC. Small windows were also open to let the fresh air in. It was thrilling to fly over the ocean and see the water below.

    We arrived in early afternoon and had arranged a place to stay with the official New Age guide of the Island. We had two bedrooms and a kitchen facing the beautiful, pale green, clear water on the South part of Bimini where all the locals live. We were offered the front part of the duplex with a locked door in between the other residence. We were so tired from the journey we decided to immediately take a nap.

    If in reality there is no time or space, everything past, present, and future is taking place in the great "NOW." As I lay my head on the pillow the thought came to me, "Oh my God we are in Atlantis!" Atlantis was a thriving society using "fire crystals" to power sea ships, cars, planes and everything else. They were known to have a pyramid, bigger than the Great Pyramid in Egypt, that had a crystal capstone faceted to collect the sun's energy. Apparently this crystal was an anti-matter device, possibly explaining the "disappearance" of planes, boats and people. Edgar Cayce predicted that Atlantis will rise again along with that huge pyramid! The Bimini Road, under the sea off the island could be a possible beginning of this.

    Our family friend, Danny Burack, was one who disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle. One Christmas Eve, in the late 1960's he was out on his boat Witchcraft (named after the popular song of that time.) Danny was showing a priest the Holiday lights of Miami. He called the coast guard and told them,"The beer box is out." and that they were near a particular numbered buoy. The beer box was really the fish locker in the back of the boat. The coast guard was there within 18 to 20 minutes and never found a trace of them. Hundreds of boats went out the next day to look for them. Everything on the boat was floatable because Danny and his wife Mary had small children. Nothing was ever found. Was Dan taken to another dimension or somehow effected by the anomalous energies of the Bermuda Triangle?

    I have been a reincarnationist since I was 11 or 12 years old. I always knew I lived in ancient Greece at the height of the Parthenon and all the "myths" of the Gods and Goddesses. I do have past life memories, especially of people I meet. You cannot tell me that I don't know certain people - it is a deep soul memory, letting me know that I knew them from some distant place "before."

    Maybe what happened to us at Bimini was "payback karma" from my time in Atlantis. I knew I had been evil there, participating in some of the down-fall of a once thriving Continent. The "Law of One" had slowly been taken over by power hungry people who started to use their many "gifts" for destruction.

    When we settled in on our first night we could feel the spirits of the past. They were clamoring to get into us. We felt them at all the windows and doors. It was the lost souls from the time of Atlantis. The air was thick with them. We lit candles, and prayed hard for protection, saying affirmations of light to appease the souls. We cleared the area and did feel safe inside.

    We were really thwarted there at every turn. We rented a golf cart to get around, it kept dying on the trail while we suffered in extreme heat. One major problem on these trails next to the ocean were huge biting horse flies. They would not leave us alone. The only relief from them was to go into the water. One afternoon Chris came out of the water to look down at her arm turned black covered with fleas! The vermin and pestilence was among us.

    It was the summer solstice and we had come to celebrate that day on Bimini. "Bonefish"came to pick us up in his boat. Edgar Cayce had spoken of the "healing hole." Bonefish knew where it was. Traveling out through the mangroves we were led off the boat to a secluded small body of water. It was a miracle that there were no bugs there. We floated for hours. We felt ice cold currents in the water. Cayce said this water was supposed to come from the Andes and that it had natural lithium in it. We were so relaxed we didn't want to leave. That same day we traveled to the "Fountain of Youth." Sorry to say it was quite a beaten up well, stones scattered, very little water. So much for renewing our youth!

    Our next stop was out in the water near the southern most tip of the island for the exact time of the summer solstice. On the land near our destination, pictographs can be seen from above. A fish or whale has been discovered while flying over the area. We jumped off the boat into the glorious sea. I can dowse with my body, and with my eyes. My eyes kept being drawn to this area near the shore. I finally swam to the site and felt the icy cold currents again. Another current from the Andes!

    Bonefish took us back to town to a place where conch fritters are the best. He met a friend in a boat along the way and exchanged fresh conch, which he readily ate, for a six-pack of beer. It is said that the fish have gold in them from the buried treasure of Atlantis. I had to try some!

    Another day we walked around the island. We felt some very unusual things. We saw people who looked "vacant," as if controlled by some type of Voodoo. The old, little cemetery was just downright spooky. We walked to the former residence of Earnest Hemingway. I swear that place was heavy with spirits of the past or maybe some of his troubled memories.

    Every day we were given the "if and reverse" on how much money we were to be charged for the boat, golf cart, and the house we were staying in. We were caught in this web of deceit. We were actually feeling threatened. One day Chris and I went to the beach to bury the crystals. A storm came up, wind fierce, and the waves crashing. It was NOT a serene ceremony to open the "Hall of Records."

    Emotions were so ruffled that Henna even wanted to leave a day early. That night we decided to stay in and cook dinner. Chris has brought some cornish hens to bake with some rice and veggies. As we sat in the living room ready to eat, I could hear Henna crunching, very loudly, on something she was eating. I looked down in my plate and there was a huge chard of glass in my next bite. The glass baking dish had splintered during the baking. Henna already had some intestinal problems. Oh my God, they're trying to kill us!

    The next morning was our last day. It was blistering hot outside. I was sitting in the living room when all of a sudden the lights and AC went out. I announced that I was not going to sit there all day in that heat, but instead spend it entirely in that beautiful water. A couple of hours before we were to leave we returned to the house. All the doors were locked! I said "Oh great, now they have stolen all of our stuff." As I looked in a window I could see my packed suitcase. Luckily someone had left a window open. Chris's son climbed in. Nothing seemed to be missing, but they had touched all our belongings and packed for us. How Bizarre!

    We walked to the airport. I couldn't wait to get out of there. The New Age guide came after us looking for a tip. Chris told him she had left two cornish hens in the freezer for him. I'm sure he equated us to the "hens."

    As we sat at the airport waiting for the seaplane, a man from the tourist bureau came up to ask me some questions about my stay there. After all it was a key destination for deep sea fishermen. I refused to answer anything and told him to ask my friends. I was holding my breath to get out of there.

    Since my episode on Bimini or should I say Atlantis, I've heard of another frightful trip, where a visitor ran into a stormy sea and thought he was going to die. Does Bimini test certain people for their past negative Karma?

    Chris did a channeling the night before we left. "The next time you come, EVERYONE WILL KNOW YOU ARE HERE." No thank you. Good to get out of there ALIVE!

    How to Save Gas While Driving

    Everyone wants to save gas but not everyone knows how to do it. The only way to save gas while driving is to 'Drive Smartly'. If you know how to handle your favorite machine on road, you can save on your gas cost and can get extra mileage. By keeping a check on your driving habit, you can certainly save money on gas. Here are a few tips on how to save gas while driving.

    Driving
    It is always advisable to skip unnecessary driving whenever possible. Plan your task before hand to avoid making repeated trips on the same route. Always prefer to walk smaller distances; it is considered as good exercise. Try to commute to your workplace in public transport at least once a week or as many times as you can manage.

    Never Speed Up

    Always Use the Top Gear
    Driving in the top gear always give a smoother ride as well as save gasoline. A frequent gear shift and applying brakes may cost you extra gas. Use the highest gear your car can handle and enjoy the pleasure of driving.

    Avoid Rush Hour and Busy Streets
    Well nobody wants to get stuck in a traffic jam but it is advisable to avoid rush hour and busy streets as much as possible. The stop and start method at busy street can reduce you gas mileage drastically. All you need to manage your time wisely. A proper timing will always benefit you throughout your life.

    Turn Off the AC
    Running the AC in car while driving put added pressure on the engine. The engine will need extra power to maintain the car speed as well as to run the AC thus killing the gas mileage. Either avoid using AC completely or run it at the lowest setting. You can turn it off once the car is cool.

    Review of the Rivera Knucklehead Guitar Amp

    Not surprising, Rivera is owned by some guy named Paul Rivera. I guess it's a little surprising that his name is Paul, but that's about it. While I hate to spread rumors about facts I don't know, this is press, and that's that the press is all about. The rumor on the street is that Paul Rivera worked for both Marshall and Fender for years modifying guitar amplifiers for the rock stars that could afford to have them modified. If this is true, it will explain a lot about the Rivera Knucklehead.

    The Rivera Knucklehead is a 100 watt, all tube, 2 – channel guitar head. Each channel has a gain boost. Both channel switching and the gain boosts can be controlled by the footswitch. As with every 100 watt head, this thing is ferociously loud. It contains an effects loop with control of input and output for effects and whatnot. The Knucklehead uses 5 12ax7 tubes for the preamps and 4 EL 34 power tubes. Each channel contains tone controls and a Focus and a Presence knob are global, which means they effect both channels. It would have been nice to have a spring reverb on the Rivera. That's the only feature that it's lacking.

    American Channel (Clean Channel)
    First off, I must say that the clean channel isn't so much like a clean channel, necessarily. It's more like a Fender channel. I mean that if you crank up the gain on the clean channel, you will have a very distorted sound in the way that a Fender distorts. This sound is not going to be what you want for metal in most cases, although it might pull off an Iron Maiden type of sound. Turning the “Ninja Boost” off and backing the gain down brings you back down into Fender territory. It's not an exact clone of the Fender sound, necessarily. The tubes used are not typically found in Fenders and even if you had the same tubes, the Fender sound is quite different from amp to amp. You have tremendous options in your tone. I mean TREMENDOUS!!! You have the typical bass, mids, and treble. By pulling out the treble pot you engage the “bright boost” and when you pull out the mids you engage the “mid scoop”. The tone controls are the most sensitive that I've ever seen on a guitar amplifier. In fact, the tone knobs can be too sensitive.

    Plugging a strat or tele gives you the real deal tone. It's pretty much a Fender amplifier. Plugging a Les Paul or PRS is a different ball game. The tones are absurd on this channel. You should be able to get anything you want out of this Fender side that you would expect a Fender to do. This amp is very sensitive to different guitars and it's tone will change more drastically than other amps.

    Distortion Channel (Marshall Channel)
    Alright, I called this side of the amp the Marshall channel. The tone is not exactly a Marshall. I own a 1971 Marshall Super Lead. It's sound is quite a bit different than what you hear in the Rivera. I wouldn't say the tone is necessarily better or worse, but different. When you get to this caliber of guitar amplifiers, they are all good, it's just a matter or preference.

    The distortion channel has a gain boost, bass, mids, and treble. Once again, these tone controls are as sensitive as you will ever find in a guitar amp. It's stupid how much control you have over your tone. This amp has too much gain, if you want too much gain. With a Les Paul, I don't think I've put the gain past 12 O Clock, ever. You would not believe how different this amp sounds when you take the mids to 0 and then up to 10. It's a night and day difference.
    With the gain boost turned off, this thing feels like a good medium to low gain distorted amplifier. As I said, choosing the right guitar and tone settings can be time consuming, but getting whatever you want is a possibility. It's worth trying all your guitars with this amp. There will be some that obviously shine more than others. In this setting, it's no problem at all pulling off tones such as AC/DC and other 70s tones. I'd probably go with my 1971 Superlead first for this application though, just because of the tone differences, but I could make a guitar player looking for that tone very happy as well.

    When you engage the gain boost, this thing is all out death. I'm talking deathmetal death, if that's what you are looking for. In my opinion turning up the gain to a stupid amount, cranking the lows and highs, and scooping out all the mids is tremendous overkill. I'd say it's unusable. The kid down the street may totally love it, though. I guess that's the great thing about this amp. You can make the sound too thin or too thick....too bright or too dull. It's up to your playing, your guitar, and your tone settings.

    With the gain boost on and the all settings on 7, this amp is a full blown rock machine The tones inside this amp are impressive. You will find a sound that you like. It just takes some time to find that perfect combination. This takes more time than a Marshall does. Sometimes the mids on 5 are too much when the lows are on 6. But lowering the lows down to 5 might require a little more mids, for example. I'm saying that the tone controls are high dependent on each other.

    This amp would always be my first choice playing out live. It's a mammoth sound if I want and gives me 4 great sounds with the footswitch. Going from mega gain to dirty clean is just a step away. Going from pretty clean to low gain distortion is also just a click away. I'd say it's one of the best live amps you can buy.

    In the studio.... well, this thing gets used on just about every project I do. I haven't found a project that it didn't work well on. I've recorded country, rock, and death metal with this amp and every single one of them was very happy with it.

    In conclusion, I wouldn't change a thing about the Rivera. It is worth every penny.

    Electric RC Helicopter - Dyna Hawk GX - First Flight Review

    I recently had the pleasure of obtaining my very own Dyna Hawk GX: Blackguard. It came in a kit, ready to fly. Included in the kit was the helicopter, remote, AC adapter, rechargeable battery pack (Li-Po), 4 extra blades (2 for each rotor), a small screwdriver (used for tightening blades and other repairs), instruction manual, and a parts list. The first thing i did when i opened the kit was pull out the Dyna Hawk GX. After i had taken that out, looked it over, and straightened the blades correctly, I continued by pulling the rest of the contents out to make sure everything was there. Once i was finished checking, I grabbed the manual and read through it. Being that it was manufactured in China, the manual has both English and Chinese translations. Some of the instructions were a little confusing, but all-in-all, it guided me through the process of getting ready to fly.

    After reading the manual, the next step is to charge the Li-Po battery and obtain 8 AA batteries (not included) for the remote. The remote itself has 2 thumb-sticks. One of the thumb-sticks controls the throttle or "lift", and the turns the helicopter or controls the "direction". There is also 2 buttons under the throttle stick that you use to "tune" your helicopter in flight. These buttons are used to decrease the "spinning" and help your helicopter hover straight. (For further instruction, see the manual.)

    After the battery is fully charged, follow the instructions to install it on the bottom of the Dyna Hawk GX. The trick is to get the wires that you plug the battery into "tucked" into the "cockpit" and out of the way. This is the only way to get the battery "clicked" into place and flush, no wires hanging. Once the battery is connected, the helicopter cockpit has a steady blinking light that shows the Dyna Hawk is ready. You are now "almost" ready for flight.

    Install 8 AA batteries into you remote, screw on the antenna and extend it, then turn on you remote. Always keep the antenna extended all the way when in use. Not doing so could result in "loss of reception" which would cause you to lose control and crash. With both the battery installed and your remote on, gently ease the throttle stick forward (up), making both blades spin creating "lift". If your helicopter's blades spin, you are ready to fly after a few simple adjustments. (refer back to the manual for these adjustments.)

    After the adjustments are made, it is time to have some fun! The Dyna Hawk GX is an "indoor" electric RC helicopter. It is not made for outdoor flight. My recommendation, (as well as the manufacturers) is to find a "wide-open" indoor area in which to fly it in. A great flight zone would be an indoor basketball court, free of any obstacles. Being impatient, and also due to bad weather, i decided to try mine out in my living room. ( i don't recommend this and i will explain why later.)

    At first, it took me a while to get used to the throttle. The manual suggests doing some training to get used to the flight controls and has several different exercises to master. I recommend doing these if you are a first time flyer. Once i got used to the throttle, i was quickly able to get the Dyna Hawk GX to hover around my living room. The turning reacts very quickly, sometimes over-turning, so feathering the "right" thumb-stick is crucial. Also, make sure that there are no drafts, open windows, or vents on in your flight zone. The slightest breeze can cause your Dyna Hawk GX to not fly correctly and lose control. With some practice, mastering the flight control with the Dyna Hawk GX comes quickly, and you will soon be flying around for the full charge of the battery.

    Now, the reason i recommend not flying around obstacles: While the Dyna Hawk GX is a rather well built RC helicopter, especially for the price, it is not indestructible. Normally, if you lose throttle, it will drop straight down and bounce off the floor without much of a problem. But, if you happen to crash land into an object (lets say a couch for example), it can cause damage. When i crashed into a couch, the blades hit it and i broke the plastic inner shaft piece. This part is what makes the bottom blades spin the same speed as the top and helps prevent spin of the whole helicopter (acts as a tail rotor). If i hadn't crashed into the couch, no damage would have been done. My mistake. Fortunately, a lot of "hobby shops" carry spare for parts and this part can be replaced for a minor investment. I personally chose an aluminum inner shaft piece so that this problem is less likely to occur again. I also will now only fly in "obstacle free" areas with plenty of space.

    Bottom line, the Dyna Hawk GX is a great helicopter for beginner to intermediate flyer's, ages 12 and up. The battery, fully charged, will last 10 - 15 minutes of solid flight and also charges relatively fast. This makes waiting between flights shorter and gives you more continuous fun. It is one of the better looking apache models and i have had several compliments on it already. With proper care and increased flight skills, I am sure that this particular electric RC helicopter will bring you plenty of enjoyment over time. To make it last longer, always recharge the battery right after flight exhaustion, and then give it 5 minutes before you take flight again to let the motor cool down. This will help prevent motor "burnout". Also, never leave the battery uncharged for a lengthy period of time. Storing a Li-Po battery uncharged could cause it to be unable to hold a charge and results in having to replace the battery sooner than later. Batteries are not cheap. Occasionally air blast the Dyna Hawk GX down to get rid of any dust that might have attached to it. And always, always fly in an area completely free of obstacles to reduce the chance of damage when you crash. Do these things and the Dyna Hawk GX: Blackguard will remain another great addition to your arsenal of electric RC vehicles!
