Starting a Mobile Locksmith Business

By George Robertson

One of the best decisions I ever made in my 62 years of life on this planet was to become my own boss in a field that is never dull, always challenging, and intrinsically interesting. It was not an early decision. In fact it did not occur to me to enter this field until after I'd already spent ten years as a professional photographer. It came about in an odd way, as many serendipitous things do. But regardless of how it came to be, I consider that decision the one that paved the way for me to spend the rest of my working life in comfort and with a good measure of security.

I've since discovered that many people follow a similar course, turning to locksmithing only after finding themselves unhappy in other jobs. I'm not sure how or why so many discover this particular business when looking for an interesting career. In my case it was a natural progression from a rather unique part-time career I had fashioned for myself: That of installing simple door viewers and doing this door to door. Many times my customers would ask if I could install deadbolts for them while I was at it, and after turning down money a dozen or so times I finally got wise and visited a local locksmith supplier who sold me an install kit and a book of instructions. From what I can tell, others come across this idea by doing Internet searches for home businesses, because ultimately this qualifies as such if you, like I do, run it out of your home and structure it as a Sole Proprietorship. In any case, it is obvious that locksmithing has become a popular choice for a chance at self-employment.

After tiring of door to door selling (which didn't take long to do) I hit upon the idea of cold calling. I was still thinking too small, but at the time I didn't know it. Lesson Number One: Don't do this. I was doing it back in 1981 or so when the stigma attached to such endeavors wasn't quite so strong. I'm afraid that calling people out of the phone book and asking if they'd like to have deadbolts installed just would not fly in the present era of terrorism and business rip-offs.

Still, I owe to this period of hard knocks a good deal. I became efficient at installing locks, rekeying locks, and duplicating keys. It was during this one year period that I scrounged together enough money to purchase a small key duplicator and also a lock rekeying kit. I carried these items in the trunk of my car and carried them into my customer's home when needed. I also purchased several boxes of the most common domestic key blanks and by the time I'd accumulated all this stuff my car's trunk was crammed and I was wishing for more room. Also, and most important, I came to realize that driving around in an unmarked car and working out of the trunk was not lending itself well to my credibility.

Lesson Number Two: Start out with credibility. Purchase a small work van, or a large one if you can afford it. Buy signs or have signs painted on it. Use whatever lending power you have, may it be with banks or with family, to locate a used vehicle and have signage made up, even if this is in the form of magnetic signs. Of course all this suggests you start out as a legitimate business, and this is just my point. Create a name for your business (think long and hard about this, as you'll lose any credibility you might initially gain if you keep changing it), have signs and forms and letterheads made up, and dive in.

There is, too, the question of legality. This is a hard subject to field, because the legality of doing business from one jurisdiction to another can differ widely, and even wildly. It is incumbent upon you to do the research and determine whether or not your jurisdiction requires a locksmith be certified, bonded, and/or licensed. You'll almost certainly discover that licensing is the fundamental hurdle, and that is usually taken care of with the signing of a few forms and the payment of a small annual fee. Certification is something else. Not all jurisdictions require this. In my case I found that the state in which I was then living -- Utah -- did not require it. Nor was I required to be bonded, though I chose to do so for the added protection (it is widely and incorrectly thought that bonding protects the locksmith's customer, whereas in fact it is the locksmith that is protected by the bond).

Lesson Number Three: Do the homework required to determine if acquiring a business license is all that is needed to establish your locksmith service. One phone call to your state's Attorney General office will likely answer that question.

Once you have lined up an affordable vehicle and put a reasonably professional sign on it, you must begin outfitting it. This should, and must, be done before you begin advertising your services because if you are like I was at this point you know next to nothing about the business and not much more about the work. We will endeavor at this point to educate ourselves. Locksmithing is in point of fact one of the few professions left in this world in which a formal education is absolutely UNnecessary. I have spoken to very few professionals during my career who got to be that way through going to a 'locksmith school' or a college. This is certainly not to say that a formal education isn't desirable. If you can afford it, if you have the means, then by all means take that route. This article is for those of you who can't.

The vehicle you purchase will in large part determine how it is to be equipped. I've always preferred a full-size van (I've owned Ford, Chevy and GMC models during my career), but there are many locksmiths who just love the Astro Van or Safari Van made by GM. These minivans are popular with many different professions and are ubiquitous. You can undoubtedly find one in your price range. Either way, the first order of business is to erect a work bench that will give you as much space as possible. Best to have the bench on one side of the van and leave the opposite side for shelves or storage bins. Make it sturdy! There is nothing worse than a wobbly bench when you're trying to rekey locks. Make it level for the same reason.

You'll need a power source. It is excusable to string extension cords until you can afford something better, but bear in mind that this detracts from your professionalism. The ultimate is probably having a RediLine Generator that runs off your van's 12V power. This is not a power inverter, it is actually a generator and it kicks out 110-115V power. They are wonderful sources of AC power and you can even run a bank of flourescent lamps off one of these for your interior shop lighting. There are several models to choose from with varying outputs, but they are expensive. If you can locate a rebuilt, so much the better. A good inverter might do the trick if you can't afford a RediLine, but be careful. Some key machines (and you're going to have to have one) will not run with an inverter.

Power now available, you need to start out with at least a key duplicator on your bench and preferably, as well, a good code cutting machine. The latter is desirable but not necessary in the beginning unless you plan to launch directly into automotive locksmithing, in which case you'll find it hard to get along without one. We'll touch on that in a moment. Key machines are almost impossible to find used. You'll likely end up buying a small HPC Speedex because they're pretty much the least expensive good key duplicator around. Expect to pay around $500. Best if you include this in your initial loan. A key duplicator is bread and butter for any locksmith, mobile or otherwise, so don't even think about starting up until you have one.

Equip yourself with a good rekeying kit. I've always preferred 'universal' kits because they do the work of dozens of other keyway-specific kits and they are easy to use. LAB makes the best of these, hands down. If you have the space, try to get a metal Classic Kit. If you don't, you can start out with one of LAB's Mini-Durex kits or, better, the miniature version of the Universal Kit (LMK-005 or LMK-003). You simply can't rekey locks without one, and if you get a Universal you won't be confined to keying up one or two brands . . . you'll be able to handle them all. Don't know how to rekey locks? Pick up an instruction manual on the Internet or at Amazon.com. They are available and this is one of the quickest locksmith skills to pick up. While you're at it, buy at least one plug follower, a pair of pin tweezers, and ideally a pair of TruArc pliers. Over time you'll accumulate more rekeying tools but these fundamentals are nearly essential.

Even before I was making money rekeying locks, I was being called to open cars. If you intend to advertise yourself as an emergency service, you're going to have to take in this kind of lucrative work. Let me tell you now, this will be the easiest money you've ever made. It is well worth learning the skills required to open vehicles even if it means spending a couple of hundred dollars on tools and a good manual. Lockouts, at least in my case, virtually supported me for years. If you live in a medium to large city, count on getting lockout calls day and night even if you have only a tiny ad somewhere (a subject for later). There are many good lockout kits available online, to suit any budget, and the same goes for lockout manuals. Do a Google search for 'car opening tools' or 'lockout tools' and you'll have no trouble finding suppliers. Are they legal where you live? Again . . . this is up to you to determine. The supplier cannot and will not endeavor to police this aspect of marketing, as it is simply not possible. I'm not advocating the purchase of anything that is not legal where you reside!

House and business lockouts are likewise lucrative sources of income for the locksmith, but these require different skills, different tools. Here is where it becomes necessary to learn the skill of lock picking -- probably the most fundamental skill of the trade. It is not as easy to learn as car opening and lock rekeying, but it is by no means difficult, either. It requires practice and patience, and it requires good tools. Do not get stingy here. There are lots of cheap lock picking tools for sale. You'll find them in automotive magazines, even. Stick with tools from the established firms like HPC, SouthOrd, Lockmasters, etc. Purchase a beginner's set with a few picks and one or two tension tools for start, unless you have a big budget, then go for a set that will last you a while. Choice of spring steel or stainless steel is largely a matter of personal choice. Whichever one you start out with will likely be the kind you'll stay with, because you'll form an attachment to that type and you'll train yourself to make the best of it. More important is the concept of practice. Buy Practice Locks. Once you've picked all the locks in your home you're going to need more challenges, and now that Practice Locks are an accepted training aid in this field you'd do well to pick up a few of them. Practice until you can repeatedly pick the most challenging of your Practice Locks and then practice some more.

Did I mention that servicing lockouts will likely be the single most lucrative service you offer your customers? I thought so. Good!

There are other aspects to providing a locksmith service and among these is the ability to install locksets on homes and businesses. Primarily you'll be asked to install deadbolts, but later on, as your business gets bigger, you'll want to offer commercial business and real estate companies the option of replacing all their old lock hardware for newer more secure hardware. Again, practice is called for and you should be prepared to install a few unnecessary deadbolts and knobsets on doors in your own home that don't need them. After doing this a dozen or so times, it will be easy to go to that first installation with confidence. You'll need to add a few essential tools to your toolbox, such as a 1/2 inch drill, a couple of hole saws (2-1/8 inch and 1-inch), a 1/2 inch boring bit, and a good wood chisel. With these tools, you can install deadbolts in metal or wood doors. Complete installation kits are available and are the best choice if you can work them into your budget. Need instruction? Books galore available on Amazon.com or at any large scale bookstore in your city.

Once you've accumulated vehicle and the tools, and some knowledge gleaned from practice and reading, you can start thinking about getting your feet wet. The best way to start is the old fashioned way and that is to appeal to family and friends for work and for referrals. Network. Talk to everyone you know and let them know you're serious about this and that you are available. Step two is to advertise and this is absolutely necessary, even if you start out only as a listing in the Yellow Pages. This is where 99% of the people who need a locksmith will look. Newspaper ads, flyers (Yucchhh!), direct mail and radio ads don't work for locksmiths unless you have one enormous budget. Try to justify a small one-eight or one-quarter page Yellow Page ad if at all possible. Even in the face of huge competition, you will get calls and over time your name will be spread around, if you do a good job. Well, it will get spread around if you don't, as well, but you'd do well to avoid that.

That's how I did it. That's how thousands of others have done it, give or take a detail or two. Be sure to cover the legal bases, because if you jump into it and find later that you're acting outside the law, don't come to me! This is part of your research. It is not that difficult to acquire a certification and satisfy local laws that may pertain to this business. If you keep the business small, and maintain yourself as a sole owner, you're going to be profiting right off the bat because overhead with a mobile service is nil.

It's within your reach whether you're 18 or 58.

Home Solar System - Shield Your Home From Energy Rates Increase With Home Solar Systems

By Ken J. Maxwell Platinum Quality Author

There has been a lot of interest on renewable energy system for home usage. Many home owners are starting to be aware about energy costs. This in effect was caused by the recent gasoline price increase that has created a lot of hardship for car owners. Will house owners face the same problem in the future? Nobody has the answer to that question. It is always a good idea to prepare yourself than waiting for the issue to arise. Hence the rise on the interest for renewable energy systems for residential usage.

One form of renewable energy setup is a home solar system. Our homes are exposed to abundant free energy from the sun. The challenge is to create a system to capture the free energy and utilize it on our electrical components. What we need is a Photovoltaic Array. Photovoltaic or solar cells are used to convert the sun energy to electricity. Solar cells used to be expensive making a home solar system impractical in the past. Luckily, the cost of solar cells has dropped substantially due to technology advancement in the production process.

The concept of a home solar system is quite simple. What you will need is a solar array to collect the sun ray and the array is connected to a charge controller. The charge controller is used to store the energy into deep cycles batteries. Next the batteries are connected to an inverter where it converts DC to AC current. The AC electricity is then connected to the home main power panel and the electricity is distributed throughout house.

Want to know how you can build your own Home Solar Panels to reduce your electricity bill for under $300? If you are good with hand tools, start a Do It Yourself (DIY) project to construct a residential solar array to harness free energy from the sun. What you will need is a step by step instructional guide. Get a comprehensive Solar Power For Homes guide review at http://www.DIYSolarHomes.com

A GPS Receiver Unit Will Use GPS Navigation To Track All Your Global Positioning

By Daryl Plaza Platinum Quality Author

GPS is basically a global positioning system used to locate a GPS receiver, which will receive in three-dimensional space anywhere you might be on earth. GPS is controlled by 21 active orbiting satellites at almost 12000 miles above the Earth. The GPS navigation system is designed to have multiple tracking satellites at any given point on Earth. Ground control stations and spare satellites complete the full global tracking system.

GPS navigation is probably one of the most astounding inventions to help mankind in so many different applications. An example of GPS you might not have thought of is parcel-tracking delivery by truck, ocean liner guidance systems; airlines right down to hikers to golf cart GPS. The reason GPS navigation is so widely used is because of the very rapid and high degree of accuracy, which can be used in all weather conditions and any time you need it no matter where you are on earth. With the use of transmitted radio signals from satellites your GPS receiver has the ability to find your position within 50 feet (15 m).

GPS software is used to take the information and evaluate the position of the GPS receiver. There is a very basic principle that is used from the gps receivers that is it reads signals from multiple satellites and places at least three positions on the ground taking a barring and draw a line through three points then you'll know exactly where you are globally positioned. There are a few limitations that may hinder your calculations. First the GPS navigation receiver should have a clear view to the sky in order to receive data. Radio microwave signals travel in straight lines just the same way light waves do. You will find anything solid will block your signal such as a canyon wall or even trees. Any weather conditions like snow or rain will not interfere with a satellite signal.

How does a GPS unit work?

The GPS navigation unit is all based on precise time measurement. All satellites that are used for GPS positioning and tracking have several atomic clocks on board their systems. It all starts with the satellite transmitting exact time radio signals that your GPS receiver will pick up on. The satellite radio signal delivers precise time to information, giving the GPS receiver exact timing when the satellite sent the signal. The GPS navigation unit onboard database computer uses this measurement of time in transit; at the same time the satellite will send a transmission navigation signal and will tell the GPS software their exact position. With this information in your GPS receiver it will calculate the distance from the satellite and give you your GPS navigation system location on a spherical surface, which is known as (map datums). A GPS device then links to more satellites and will complete the same procedure where the three points meet and show where the GPS navigation unit is positioned. By acquiring a signal from a fourth satellite will just refine your global position.

What to look for and a GPS unit

Signal loss:. Canyons and caves at any tall buildings will hinder your readings. You will be able to minimize this if you use a system that continuously monitors multiple satellites at a time

GPS software: check the GPS software and what if any restrictions it may have. Is it good for mapping, is it economical, will the program lasts for more than a couple years.

GPS power supply: how long will the battery last, GPS units draw a lot of power if left on continuously. Check to see if it has an AC adapter input.

GPS/maps/directions: look at the mapping capability and how it is displayed on your GPS unit. Can you upload old mapping from your PC. Will it work if you travel outside your country? Will this mapping system last several years as markets change rapidly.

GPS and durability: check to see and how water resistant the unit is. Also look at the shockproof design to see how rugged it is. Temperature limits have a big impact on GPS units as they don't work well under extreme temperatures.

GPS navigation can be used in several different areas

There are several different uses that you could use a GPS unit. On the road in a car, hiking the wilderness out in the water or even in the air. All of these areas can be sub categorized to more specific uses depending on your specific GPS needs. Looking for a vehicle tracking GPS realize that these units need to have some reasonable accuracy and be reliable. They must contain road maps detailing areas that you want.

Remember the satellite is only used for transmitting and timing of global positioning informational data and don't send actual area maps data, that is up to your GPS navigation unit to calculate. There are portable GPS devices that you can quickly install in the vehicle for the same use. You can always acquire a handheld GPS unit and be portable and on the move anywhere you need to be. One more is the Marine GPS, which uses very specific GPS mapping software programs because it needs to use information differently it also should be water resistant to protect itself.

Generate Power Using Solar Panels

By Rick Walkending Platinum Quality Author

The most important part of any solar power system is the solar panels. These are what actually collect the sunlight and convert it into electricity. The electricity generated by these panels is DC which is suitable for powering many small gadgets and devices. A lot of appliances will operate on AC power which may mean you will also need an inverter.

The inverters are used to convert the DC power into AC power to be used by your appliances. These are similar things to what the police use in order to power coffee makers and power tools in their car. You need an inverter to run household appliances that do not otherwise convert the electricity into DC. You can purchase a solar power system which includes batteries, the electricity which is generated will be used to charge the batteries. This means that electricity will be available even if it's dark. The bigger the solar panels you choose to install, the more power you have available. A single panel system will normally power lights for a number of hours, however if you add more devices you might need more panels.

Solar panels are still fairly expensive and so creating a system with lots of solar panels it may seem too expensive. If you want to run your whole house from solar power then you will need a fairly large array of panels in order to generate enough power. You will also need batteries and some form of backup just in case your system cannot provide enough power. At today's costs it will take around 5 years before the solar panels will have paid for themselves. This means that after five years the electricity generated will be completely free. Solar panels should last for a very long time and need very little maintenance, so if you intend to live in your house for a long time then solar panels could be a viable option.

Credits And Tax Breaks Take Sting Out Of Cost

There are some tempting tax breaks and other incentives that are offered by federal and local governments. These make the idea of renewable energy more inviting, these tax breaks will sometimes be as much as half the price of your system. Solar panels can be expected to last for 10 years before they need replacing, plus you won't need to purchase power from a utility company ever again.

Many people are reluctant to make the switch because they think that they won't be reliable. We all need electricity all day and all night, we need electricity no matter whether it is sunny or overcast outside. Batteries really do let these systems down as they are nowhere near as advanced as the solar panels themselves.

It is true that solar panels won't generate as much power on cloudy days, and may not generate any during the night. However it is possible to store this power in batteries which will see you though the night. You can also sell your excess power back to the grid and then buy from them during the night. This works like a battery in a way, and it is more efficient.

Marketing Your Wholesale Real Estate Business - It Takes More Than a Better Mousetrap

By Jordan Taylor Platinum Quality Author

No matter what business you’re in, marketing is an essential element for success. You may have built the proverbial better mousetrap, but the world will not beat a path to your door if they don’t know who you are, what you do, or how to find you.

That basic business principle is especially true for wholesale real estate investors. No matter how much you know or how good you are at putting great deals together, if buyers, sellers, and other investors don’t know about you, you won’t do much business.

“Marketing is absolutely critical to profitable wholesale real estate investing,” says AC Johnson, who teaches the Wholesale Buying advanced training course and coordinates the mentor program for Wealth Intelligence Academy®. “Certainly you need to know the mechanics of the process, such as how to figure the numbers and do the contracts. That’s important. But people have to know you’re in the business—if they don’t, how will they know to call you when they want to buy or sell?”

Johnson recommends putting together a comprehensive and targeted marketing plan that will get your name and contact information in front of as many potential buyers and sellers as possible as quickly as possible. “Your goal is to find the deals before anyone else knows about them,” he says. “To do that, you need to be creative. It doesn’t take a lot of money, but it does take dedication and effort.”

Most wholesale real estate investors know the traditional marketing methods that include working with real estate agents and brokers, checking newspaper ads for “must sell” and “handyman special” listings, and following up on “for sale” signs in yards.

“These methods work, but if properties are listed with an agent, advertised in the paper, or have a sign in the yard, then everybody knows about them, and the competition makes it tough to make a good profit,” Johnson says. “You want to separate yourself from the masses, stand out from the crowd. And you can do that with smart marketing.”

Marketing techniques that work

Some of the marketing strategies Johnson advocates include:

- Contact local attorneys. Send letters with your business card to attorneys who specialize in bankruptcies, foreclosures, family law (divorce), probate, estate planning, and real estate. These attorneys are likely to have clients who may need your services.

- Network with people who work in your target areas. Build relationships with the people who are regularly in the neighborhoods where you want to invest. They see what’s happening and can alert you to potential deals. These sources can include mail carriers, meter readers, lawn service providers, newspaper and pizza delivery people, and even trash collectors. Caution: Though you may want to compensate these sources for leads that result in deals that you close, be aware that some states interpret such compensation as a real estate commission. Before offering any referral fees, check with an attorney to be sure that you can legally do so in your state.

- Build relationships with private lenders. In addition to being a funding source for when you’re buying property, private lenders may also be a resource for wholesale deals. Let them know that you’re available to help when they have foreclosed properties on their hands.

- Put up signs everywhere you can. Post “I buy real estate” signs on street corners, trees, utility poles, and even on vacant houses. Check with local code enforcement to make sure you place your signs legally. Invest in magnetic “I buy houses” signs for your car; however, check with your insurance agent to be sure such signage will not affect your coverage.

“Signs are one of the best marketing tools for a wholesale real estate investor,” says Johnson. “A simple, easy-to-read sign on your car makes it a rolling billboard, and you never know when the person pumping gas next to you or the person shopping in the grocery store at the same time you are might have a property to sell.”

Another benefit of a sign on your car is that it lets people know what you’re doing when you are driving through neighborhoods looking for property. “An unmarked car driving slowly through a neighborhood and stopping at vacant houses could arouse suspicion and make the residents nervous,” says Johnson. “Having a sign on your car that clearly identifies your business will keep you from getting hassled by people who want to know what you’re doing. It also creates a trust factor that makes people more willing to answer your questions if you want to ask neighbors about the status of a property.”

Electric Gates - 9 Reasons Why You Should Automate Your Gates

By William C Bell

Imagine arriving home on a dark stormy night and having to get out of the car to open the gates. Then driving through and having to get out again to close them. Imagine too, the vulnerability of your home to intruders and burglars if your gates are left open because people do not bother to close them. Electric gates solve these problems and others too.

The number one benefit is security. They provide a buffer zone between your home and the undesirable elements lurking on the streets. Electrically controlled gates are a serious deterrent to the opportunist burglar, car thief or vandal. They are powered by motors that make it difficult for intruders to force them open and you can also fit a lock for even greater protection. Your automated gates could form part of a comprehensive home security system which would include video surveillance of the entrance and boundaries of your property.

They also keep out unwanted callers and door-to-door salesmen. Visitors will normally use an intercom fitted by the gate to contact you before you let them in. This allows you to decide who enters your property.

Comfort and convenience is a major benefit. It is simple to open your gates using a remote control without having to leave your car. Would you like stay warm and dry inside your car, then with the press of a button, open and close your gate? Ordinary gates are often left open because it is just too much trouble to manually open and close them every time you pass through your drive. Electric gates have a very practical benefit too. If your gates are large and heavy it may be physically difficult to open and close them manually.

Providing safety for children and pets is very important. Just as unwanted visitors are prevented from entering by automated gates so children can be kept safely inside. Electric gates can be set up to close automatically after they have been used so you do not need to worry that you have left them open and allowed your children or pets to wander out.

Electric gates will keep out wild animals like deer and rabbits and prevent them damaging the plants in your garden.

They can also give you privacy. If you have automatic solid wooden gates installed they will prevent prying eyes observing your home.

Automated gates will also prevent other motorists using your drive to turn their cars or even to park.

An attractively designed set of automatically operating gates will enhance the appearance of your home. They will give it more style and exclusivity and so add to the value of your home.

Finally, you may be able to benefit from a lower insurance rate. Some insurers may offer a discount for improved perimeter protection.

There are just so many benefits to be had from electric gates that everyone who owns a home with a drive should strongly consider installing a set. You can improve your home security, your family's safety, make life easier and add to the value of your home all at the same time.

How would YOUR home benefit from electric gates? Visit William Bell's web site, Electric Gate World, to find out lots more about electric gates. Web site - http://www.electricgateworld.com

Building an Overhead Projector Survival Kit

By Mark Boehm Platinum Quality Author

Many times I am asked what I would presume to be the appropriate tools to have when using an Overhead Projector to make a presentation.
Without stating the obvious I would assume that all of you are aware that you would certainly need to have an Overhead Projector. Ahh, but what type of Overhead Projector should you choose?

If you are traveling quite a bit and use your Overhead Projector to make your sales or training presentations then you should consider using a portable Overhead Projector. Now some of these portables fold to the size of a briefcase making travel through airports easy. Other types of Overhead Projectors have a folding post which makes the projector easy to transport and will easily fit in your car.

Once you have decided on which type of Overhead Projector best fits your needs its then time to put together what I call an “Overhead Projector Survival kit”. Keep in mind there is nothing worse than a room fool of students or potential clients and finding yourself caught unprepared.
With all that said, here is what I would consider to bare essentials for an “Overhead Projector Survival Kit”

The spare lamp: Always have a spare lamp with you, even if your Overhead Projector is equipped with the lamp changer feature. Projection lamps are fairly inexpensive and I suggest having several spares on hand.
One more note that I would like to add here. Make sure you carry on your person or noted inside of your Overhead Projector what the ordering code is for the projection Lamp. If for some reason you would need to purchase additional spares while on the road this information could prove to be invaluable to you in a moments notice. It is also very helpful to have the 800 number of your favorite AV Parts supplier on hand for easy access to all your Overhead Projector needs while you are on the road.

Transparency pens: Never assume that the classroom or the Board Room where you will be putting on your presentation will have the proper transparency pens and transparency film on hand. My personal preference are the water soluble pens, there are many instances where I tend to wear more of the marker than my transparencies. Water soluble pens are easy to wash away where the permanent pens require a bit more effort to remove from ones hands! A selection of different colored pens always makes for a nice presentation as well.

Cleaning towels and water: That’s right, water. When it comes to cleaning the optics of your Overhead Projector nothing works better than water. I have seen more damage done to the optics of Overhead Projectors by end users using chemicals or even something as simple as window cleaner. Stick with the water; we use it as an optical cleaner everyday in our repair shop. Now in conjunction with your water you will need a quality cleaning cloth. Paper towels will NOT do. They scratch the sensitive surface of your optics. I suggest using a fiber optic towel or something similar. They are specially designed to clean surfaces of Fresnel Lenses and Optical Glass without scratching.

Extension cord and adapter: I can’t tell you how many times I hear stories about someone having all the right tools, but no way to get power to their Overhead Projector because the cord will not reach across the room to the only available AC Outlet. I suggest having an extension cord with a minimum length of 25 feet. Now once you have accomplished reaching the AC Outlet, how frustrating is to find that the receptacle does not take a grounded plug. Oh how I share your frustrations. Always and I mean always, have at least two AC Adapters that will allow your grounded AC cord form your Overhead Projector to plug into those old style AC outlets that have no ground plug.

Spare Parts: Now if you are somewhat mechanically inclined, then you may want to consider having a few spare parts available for some simple repairs that could be done either in your hotel room or at home. A simple set of tools will also be required. Your Electronic tools should include wire nippers for cutting and stripping wire, a cordless solder iron with some solder, a small amount of 1/8” heat shrink tubing and a small set of screwdrivers with both flat blade and Phillips type heads. Now needless to say any serious electrical problems should be left to a professional electronic technician, but a change of a lamp socket which requires only a screw driver in most instances or replacing a broken stage glass are simple repairs that can be done in the field if you have the spare parts on hand. This could save you many hours of searching for either a repair shop or rental store trying to find a back up Overhead Projector.

You most likely will have some of your own items you will want to add to your own “Overhead Projector Survival Kit”. This article should give you a good foundation to build on and help save you some embarrassing moments the next time you go to make your presentation with your favorite Overhead Projector.

Portable Refrigerator Review

By Gregory Prather Platinum Quality Author

Situation: You just finished buying groceries, and you see an old friend that you'd like to catch up with, but dang, you need to get back and get your milk, and ice cream back to the fridge before it spoils. Wouldn't be great if you didn't have to do that? Science and technology is finding new and better ways for us to take the conveniences of our home with us wherever we go.

One of the highest-rated portables is the Koolatron P20. It operates at 12V and connects (like many others) to your cigarette lighter. Its claim to fame is that it's a lot less bulky compared to other mini's. It can fit in between seats and other places in your car, and is easily accessible. You can fit up to 23 cans of your favorite soft drink in there! It can be set to keep the inside temperature at least 40 degrees colder than the outside world as well. It also has a unique cord wrap, and a place to seat the cigarette plug. But the best part is that it can also act as a warmer. If you set it to warm, it will also keep your food warm for you on the way to wherever you're going.

As tested it performed quite well, cooling about 10+ degrees per hour. On a trip we purchased this cooler with the AC adapter option. We chilled it overnight, then in the morning stocked it with our drinks, and plugged it into the car adapter. It kept the drinks reasonably cool the entire time, and when we were ready to partake in what we chilled, we replaced with room-temperature drinks, and those chilled in a couple of hours.

Now for those worried about this unit draining the batteries on your car, you can get an optional battery saver that will shut off the unit if it starts over-draining your car battery. We're still testing it out, but it looks to be a really nice feature. Price: $75-$85.

6 Tips To Help Reduce Fuel Consumption And Gas Spending

By Hassaan Ahmed

Reducing fuel consumption not only helps reduce the harmful emissions your tailpipe is spewing out, but it also helps to improve your mpg and reduce fuel spend; in some cases it can make a real, tangible difference, especially with the sustained rise in fuel prices. When car pools, catching the bus, or cycling aren't options then there are some driving techniques that are considered green and will also prove frugal.

1 - Carefully Plan Your Trip

This may sound a little excessive if you're just nipping to the local store for some groceries, but avoiding lengthy delays, steep hills, and a stop-start journey is the most efficient method of getting from A to B and consuming less gas in the process.

2 - Drive Sensibly

Quick acceleration and last minute braking can provide up to as much as five times the emission level as considerate driving. It will also only save you a negligible amount of time but cost you considerably more in gasoline consumption. Saving energy means driving less aggressively.

3 - Minimize Air Conditioning

Using the air conditioning can increase your fuel consumption by as much as 10%. Use a window or the car's ventilation fans to get a cool breeze and limit the amount of time you use the air conditioning to times that are critical.

4 - Look After Your Car

Tyre pressure, oil level, and engine condition can all have a detrimental effect on gas consumption. By regularly ensuring that your car is serviced, your tyres pumped, and that you keep your vehicle in generally good condition, you will be helping protect the environment and reducing the money you spend every month on fuel.

5 - Buy Green

When shopping for your next car look for hybrid models or consider downsizing your engine. Smaller cars use less gas than larger cars, and hybrids use even less still. A greater number of hybrids are becoming available on the marketplace and the technology is constantly improving.

6 - Use It Less

Of course, the best way to stop producing emissions and consuming petrol is to stop driving, but the car has become a major part of life; more a necessity than a luxury. We drive to work, drop the kids off at school, drive home from work, drive to the store to get groceries, and even go for a family drive at weekends.

Find out about cars that run on water, and discover how a water powered car can help you reduce vehicle emissions and save fuel and money in the process.

Future of Hybrid Cars

By Albert Tay Platinum Quality Author

There are many design concepts being considered for maximum public exposure and benefits on the drawing board of car designers today that look to the future hybrid car needs and considerations that will serve the public well in the course of the next century. Many of these hybrid car designers are taking past and proven sales performers and have begun reworking their designs from the ground up.

Instead of a front wheel drive platform, there are automobile designers that are building on a rear platform design for one of the nation's best selling and widely recognized car frames in America and worldwide. The hybrid car designs of the future are including sports car models that have been all-time favorites with the world in the past and are now being revived with the brand new hybrid engine in mind.

There is an aggressive training program in place at one of Americas largest car manufacturing companies that is preparing their technicians to repair the growing styles and variations of hybrid cars that are emerging onto the automobile market.

With the extreme difference in battery features and dramatic variance in voltage levels, there is a void that needs to be filled by someone who is equipped with the necessary battery cabling devices that can handle 270 volts instead of the normal 12 volt battery systems. Regular car technicians are typically capable of handling battery recharging requirements, but with the futuristic applications that are applied in hybrid battery design, the best service these car technicians can provide at present is that they can still provide oil changes and tire rotations should the need arise.

With a mindset of grasping and expanding the propulsion features that are somewhat limited in today's hybrid car designs, there are retro styling efforts that are focusing on providing hybrid cars with optional V8 engine capacities.

There are considerations in place to use solar cells in the framework of hybrid automobiles. The electrical power will be produced through the boot lids and bonnet placement of these solar cell modules. Through the use of solar cells it will then be possible to utilize the battery charging capabilities when the car is not turned on or in motion to replenish batteries that have been depleted through the use of air conditioning or through continuous operation when the hybrid automobile is delayed in traffic jams at different times of the day. This lightweight body structure design would benefit the energy savings to the consumer and make the car more manageable on the highway.

There is an effort in hybrid car design that is turning the out of the ordinary hybrid vehicle into a replica of what is parked in the driveway every day of our life. This blending in effect is meant to bring the hybrid full circle into the acceptable graces of the American public.

The future hybrid car will need to focus more on greenhouse gases that negatively effect the environment as well as a hybrid car that will be even more fuel efficient. Without these changes, the production and sales of any type of vehicle will not be possible due to the degradation of our atmosphere.

There are many views about hybrid cars in the futures that will change its fuel source from the heavy duty batteries in use today, to hydrogen-power fuel cell. This will take away the need for hybrid cars to have to use gasoline completely in order to transverse down the major highways.

Muscle Car Mania

By Kevin Schappell

Anyone who has been flipping though the channels has seen the Barrett Jackson auctions on The Speed Channel and the insane prices muscle cars bring. Do you have a hunkering for a tire burning, fuel guzzling muscle car? Here is how to go about it.

I classify muscle cars into three categories... Restored, Resto-Mod and Survivors. All three have their advantages and disadvantages, but all three are true muscle cars. Your budget and skills will dictate what category you build your muscle car.

The restored muscle car is one that has been totally ripped down to the frame and rebuilt with NOS (new old stock) parts and refurbished original parts. This method of restoration is the most expensive, but often results in a better than new vehicle. Some cars can be over restored. When muscle cars left the factory back in the 1960's they were never perfect. The build quality was nothing like it is today on modern cars. During a full restoration often times the body panel fit, paint work and details are finished to a level never dreamed of from the factory. If you are interested in building a fully restored muscle car you can brush up on your restoration skills, or pay someone to do it. Be warned, if you pay a professional, you will almost never get your money back when it's time to sell. If you do the work yourself and view your time spent as a hobby and recreation, you will make money if and when you sell it. If you are not interested in doing the work yourself, consider buying a car already done, as mentioned before, you can buy it for less than the expense to have one restored. Search Ebay, local magazines and online sites like classicjunkyard.com for some hot deals.

It used to be that modified muscle cars would never bring big money at auctions and were thought to be impure. In recent years at auctions this way of thinking has been turned upside down. Resto-Mod cars are cars that have been restored and modified to make them better than the factory product. The owner may have added an aftermarket exhaust, carburetor, or even put a more modern engine in the car. Creature comforts like a cool stereo or air conditioning may be added, even if it was never an option from the factory. A resto-mod muscle car can be the most fun to build and one of the cheaper ways to get into the hobby. You get the personal satisfaction of building the car the way you want without the expense of a full restoration. Matching numbers are not critical in a resto-mod car, so you can avoid hunting down those NOS parts at the swap meets.

The last category of muscle cars, is the survivor car. A survivor is just what the name implies; it's an original car, which has survived the years in its mostly original states. Hoses, belts and tires may have been changed, but the rest of the car is largely original as it came from the factory. The paint may be a little faded or chipped, but it's still all one color and looks good from 10 feet away. Many survivor cars serve as a library of information for people restoring their cars. If you own a true survivor, plan on having your car photographed and inspected by restorers, so they can get their restoration as close to factory original as possible. Survivor cars are rare, but they can still be found and many times at a reasonable price since the owner sometimes believes that the car is not worth a mint since it's not fully restored. If you are short on skills and don't have the money, a survivor car can be a great way to get into a muscle car. You can maintain the vehicle, drive it, and enjoy it for a minimal investment. If you later get the skills and or money, you can then take it to the next level and turn it into a resto-mod or full restoration.

No matter what kind of muscle car you buy or build, enjoy it! It's a great investment if done right, and will provide tons of smiles from you and everyone who sees you cruising down the street.

Volkswagen Cars Named Finalists for Ad Awards

By Anthony Fontanelle

The New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) is just around the corner and so is the IAG Research Awards. The awarding body gives distinction to automobile manufacturers that have created an ad campaign that effectively reaches their target audience.

The winners in the five categories will be announced at the opening press breakfast at the Javits Center in New York City where the country’s largest motor show will be held. The finalists for the five categories have already been announced and two Volkswagen ad campaigns for their cars were announced as finalists for the award.

The Volkswagen Jetta’s “Dance” ad campaign and the Volkswagen Passat’s “Safe Happens” ad are finalists for the “Most Effective Overall Ad” category. Aside from that, the Passat wagon is also a finalist for the “Most Effective Established Nameplate Launch Campaign” category. The finalists were chosen on the basis of their effectiveness in reaching their target viewers.

Creativity and strategic media placement are some of the criterion set by IAG Research in choosing the finalists and, finally, the winners in the five categories came into being. The determination of the winner is also based on the response of more than 1.5 million viewers who has been tapped by IAG Research to respond to a survey that they conducted.

Kurt Schneider, the General Manager of Creative Content for Volkswagen of America Inc., has this to say about their ad campaigns’ being finalists for the awards: “We are excited about being recognized by IAG. This research confirms the true effectiveness of these messages in connecting with consumers and increasing consideration for the brand.”

The VW Jetta, the center of the “Dance” ad campaign, is the top selling vehicle for Volkswagen in the U.S. market. Its strong selling point is the number of comfort and convenience features it has. The Jetta is equipped with adaptive cruise control as well as traction control allowing drivers to have complete control of the vehicle. It has a CD player and air conditioning for the comfort of the vehicle’s occupants.

As far as the ride is concerned, the Jetta is one of the best in its class, thanks to its four-wheel independent suspension system. Volkswagen gives the Jetta’s MSRP starting at $16,490 for the base model.

The VW Passat sedan on the other hand focuses on it safety features although it also offers good comfort and convenience features like the Jetta. Its safety features includes a full lineup of six airbags which covers the entire interior area of the vehicle. This vehicle can adequately protect its occupants in instances where highly efficient

brake pads are not enough to avoid accidents.

Aside from being comfortable and safe, the VW Passat also offers good fuel efficiency, thanks to its engine. Its 2.0T model is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder featuring direct-injection delivery technology.

Restoring and Insuring Classic Cars

By David Collins Platinum Quality Author

For some, owning a classic car can be a way of re-visiting their memories of starting out driving, whilst others prefer the pride (as well as the nostalgia) involved with driving a classic vehicle.

Many classic car owners around the world have a penchant for a certain type of vehicle - from minis to cruisers and even trucks.

There are an abundance of collector's clubs around the world that cater for almost every type of vehicle. Since the birth of the Internet, enthusiast websites - including photography of build and restore projects - have sprung up, providing an insight into those who dedicate time and money into buying and restoring classic vehicles.

As most owners of classic cars will probably tell you, when it comes to areas such as car insurance and finding spare parts, it can be a tricky business unless you know where to look.

Indeed, classic car restoration has proven to be a popular hobby, whether you're looking to follow in the footsteps of relatives who've owned classic vehicles or fancy a try at putting an old car you've rescued from the scrap yard back together again.

For those looking to tread the water and have a go at restoring an old classic to its former glory, it's important to have a grasp of the mechanical aspects of the vehicle, as well as an idea of how much spare parts are going to cost you.

Research in the run-up to the beginning of the project is essential, whether you're working on an Alfa Romeo or an old ice cream van.

Before embarking on such a project you need to take certain aspects into consideration:
  • What type of vehicle/model of vehicle do you want to restore?
  • It is important to research prices and availability of your chosen vehicle. It can be worth looking into salvage sites as well as specialist suppliers and comparing prices to try and get the most affordable deal.

  • Do I have the space in order to embark on a build?
  • Many make use of garages as bases for build projects, it's essential to check with neighbours before embarking on a build in order to ensure that there'll be no issues with noise pollution in future.

  • Where will you get the spare parts?
  • It is important to identify a spares supplier for your chosen vehicle early on. Find out if they cater for your particular model and identify which parts are needed immediately and which can wait till the last minute (such as décor and badges)

  • How long will it take to complete?

This can depend on your ability level, knowledge of the vehicle you're working on and the availability of parts for the vehicle. However you'll always find someone on the internet who can offer useful advice - usually as a result of their own build projects.

The rarer the car, the harder it can be to find parts, but there'll always be someone selling the part you need - be it in a shop or through an online store.

Restoring an old classic can take time and money, however with a bit of perseverance and a good relationship with specialist spares suppliers, your restoration project can be successful and rewarding.

Thinking of restoring a classic vehicle to it's former glory? Be sure to research spares suppliers and car insurance before embarking on your project.

Electric Vehicles and How They Work

By Richard Chapo Platinum Quality Author

With all of our oil problems, the idea of the electric vehicle has risen from the ashes. Here is a guide to electric vehicles and how they work.

Most of the people in the world will either drive or ride in a vehicle in their lifetime. Most of these vehicles will be powered by an internal combustion engine, which will run on either gasoline or diesel fuel. While these vehicles have been the standard for nearly a hundred years now, new engine types have started to make an impact on the vehicle scene, which include electric and hybrid engines. Electric engines are the cleanest engines available to consumers today, so it's important to learn about electric vehicles and how they work.

Electric vehicles usually look just like “normal” vehicles on the outside, except for the lack of a tailpipe (and exhaust system). Internally, however, and under the vehicle, a big difference can be seen. There is no gas tank (as electric vehicles do not burn fuel) and battery packs are often found either under the vehicle or in the trunk. These batteries are the same type that are used to start a gasoline powered vehicle, only there are many more of them used in conjunction to store energy to power the vehicle. There is also a regulator attached to the batteries to make sure that the amount of energy produced and used by the vehicle is constant, and that none of the batteries burn out.

Another interesting thing to note about electric vehicles and how they work is the fact that almost everything besides the engine in an electric vehicle is the same as that in a gas powered vehicle. The transmission, brakes, climate control systems and air bags all function in the same way. The electric motor itself is the true difference. There are three types of electric motors that are available on the market today: the AC Brushless (good top speed, but low acceleration), the AC Induction (ok top speed, best acceleration, but highest price) and the Permanent Magnet (middle of the road in performance). Any of these motors can be used to create an electric vehicle.

While an electric vehicle moves, the momentum generated while braking can be used to charge the batteries for power. Called regenerative braking, this specialized braking system can help you recover up to 15% of the energy used for acceleration by applying the momentum generated in the braking process to the batteries. While this does not provide enough recharge to fully run your electric vehicle, it can help to extend the amount of driving you can do.

There are other aspects of electric vehicles and how they work that can be discussed, such as battery types and other additions to make your vehicle more energy efficient. Electric vehicles may not be the speediest or easiest to maintain vehicles available today, but with new technology being developed all the time, electric vehicles will eventually become a great alternative to polluting combustion engine vehicles.

The Top Three Best Rental Properties in Arizona!

By Kristi Ambrose

I have always loved Arizona not only is it beautiful but it's also always nice and sunny! Recently, however, I decided to visit the mountains of Arizona and I have to say it, even though I usually love sunny days, the mountains were more incredible than I could have ever imagined. Before trying to decide where I wanted to stay I obviously visited a few dozen websites to try to get a feel for the best one for what I needed it for; some good old R&R. I visited around a few sites, narrowed them down and came to my top three choices. Of course the one I picked was number one, but they really are all fantastic in their own way.

The Spruce Lodge -
I tell ya it was super hard for me to pick which one I liked the best because all three are absolutely amazing. This 3 bedroom, den, 2 bath log sided home is well over 1900 square feet. The kitchen opens to an expansive Great Room with a rustic rock fireplace and pine log mantel. Cozy aspen ceilings warm the Great Room and Den. You will enjoy the privacy of the split bedroom plan. The Master Retreat features its own covered deck, walk- in closet, and private bath with jetted tub. Features include; gas fireplace, BBQ, jetted tub, refrigerator, range, microwave, washer and dryer, 3 covered decks, 2 car garage, high speed wireless Internet, AC and hear and along with the other rentals above; restaurants, shopping, golf, antique shops, cinemas, lakes, streams, hiking, and much more is nearby!

The Ponderosa Lodge -
Another favorite. This is a home that is built on a hill in the Pine top Country Club area, it's about one half acres big and is surrounded by huge pine and oak trees. All of these homes have a very rustic feel to them which I personally loved. It's nice getting away from the city for a while! Pine top's restaurants, tennis, golf, hiking, equestrian center, casino, antique shops, wild life viewing, and new cinema are MINUTES away! This is awesome if you want to go out to eat but also want to be far enough away to have some peace and quiet. A few features you can look forward to are 2 bedrooms plus a loft, large screen TV, DVD, and CD, rock fireplace, hot tub, BBQ, patio table and chairs, refrigerator, microwave, range and dishwasher along with some really nice features you might have in your own home such as washer and dryer, garage, central heat and large walk in closets!

Juniper Lodge -
This house has almost 1800 square feet as well as 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. Pine top Crossing is a charming enclave of log sided homes in a private setting. When you see the impressive elk entry feature; you know you have arrived! The Juniper lodge is conveniently located to Highway 260 for quick access to restaurants, casino, new cinema, antique shops and more! Golf, tennis, hiking, cycling, equestrian center, and wildlife viewing are MINUTES away! Enjoy lakes, streams, Sunrise Ski Resort, trophy elk hunting, sledding, boating, and more within about 30 minutes away. A few features you can look forward to are large screen TV, DVD, and CD, fireplace, BBQ, refrigerator, microwave, range and dishwasher along with some really nice features you might have in your own home such as washer and dryer, garage, central heat and gated community for privacy.

These are rental homes you absolutely have to check out the next time you are in Arizona or your planning on going there for a vacation. It doesn't matter if it's a short weekend or an entire month, you owe it to yourself to check these out! Of course prices vary on all three of these so please take a look and see which one can give you the best benefits for your dollar! Again, all three are really nice and have a nice quiet, rustic, woodsy feel to them. If you're an outdoors person, you will like these. If you like a touch of luxury you will like these. And if you like both, then you will LOVE these!

How to Choose the Right Air Conditioner Filter

By Marcus Peterson Platinum Quality Author

The air filter in an air conditioning system keeps the cooling coils and air inside the room clean and free from all pollutants, pet dander, ozone emissions and airborne particles.

There are many different kinds of air filters available today, such as HEPA, standard, pleated, electrostatic and electronic filters. Of these, standard, pleated and electrostatic filters are the most common types of filters that are used in air conditioners. Generally these filters are located in walls, ceilings, furnaces, or in the air conditioner itself.

Standard Air Filters, having the capacity of removing 10 percent of the airborne pollutants, are made of spun fiberglass with cardboard frames. . They should be changed once a month.
.
Pleated Air Filters catch around 35% to 40% of the particles in the air. Owing to their greater surface area with filter material folded back and forth like a paper fan, manufacturers claim that they can last from two to four months. The cost of these filters ranges from $5 to $20 which is slightly more than that of standard filters.

Electrostatic filters use filter media, which use an electric charge to attract the dirt particles in the air. These filters may have electric charge built-in, or else the air moving through the layers of the system creates electric charge. They may cost from around $20 to over $100 each. These filters only need to be changed once a year.

Sometimes people with allergies may consider the usage of an electronic air cleaner in the air conditioner, which works on the same principle as that of electrostatic filter. However, it is far more effective than electrostatic filter and does not hinder the flow of air inside the air conditioning system. Whatever type of air conditioner filter you use, it is advisable to check the cleanliness of the coils of the filter by a contractor at least once in a month.

Perhaps the most important measure that will ensure the efficiency of an air conditioner is frequent replace of its filters. One should change the air conditioner’s filter regularly, as clogged, dirty filters block normal air flow and reduce the system's efficiency significantly by impairing the coils’ heat-absorbing capacity.

Air Filters Info provides detailed information on home, car, electronic, and HEPA air filters, as well as air conditioner filters and air filter manufacturers. Air Filters Info is the sister site of Air Purifiers Web.

Replacing an Engine

By Ronnie W Tanner

If you are contemplating replacing an engine there are few things to consider. First, identify the exact problem with the current engine. Determine if the transmission and starter will need to be replaced. If the engine has been run without oil or water; or if it is smoking excessively then the engine will probably need to be changed out. If the problem is confined to the engine then the transmission may not need to be replaced.

However, if the vehicle has an automatic transmission and the engine has been run without water then the transmission may have been damaged as well. This is because the transmission fluid in an automatic transmission is cooled by the radiator also. The items needed to change out an engine include gloves, power tools, an engine hoist, and of course the replacement engine. Once the correct tools have been assembled and the replacement engine is on hand, the old engine is now ready to come out. The first step is to disconnect the battery cables, beginning with the negative cable. Proceed to the next step by taking off the all accessible parts connected to the engine.

Be sure to tag each part and note their placement on a piece of paper. Now it's time to drain the radiator and remove any coolant and heater hoses from the radiator and then remove the radiator. Next remove the ac compressor and accessories. The alternator is removed next by taking out the bolts and disconnecting it from the battery. The power steering pump is unbolted and removed next. At this point it's time to drain any fluids out of the engine and unbolt the motor mounts.

Be sure to check the motor mounts for excessive wear at this time. If you are not changing out the transmission then unbolt it from the engine. Attach the engine to the engine hoist and remove it from the car. The engine may need to be tilted slightly to attain clearance from the firewall. Once the old engine has been removed and stored in a secure location, now is a good time to clean and paint the engine compartment if so desired. The replacement engine is now ready to be installed.

Hoist the replacement engine and place it into the engine compartment. Start replacing all removed parts, going in reverse order. Connect the replacement engine to the transmission, being sure to check the fluid levels in the transmission. Replace the oil in the newly installed engine.

Once all components have been reattached to the engine, it's time to crank up the vehicle. Let the engine warm up and now it's ready for its first test drive. Replacing an engine can be a challenging task but with the proper tools and preparation, it can save money and enable the car owner to enjoy his vehicle for years to come.

NewAir AC-1600H Portable AC - Most Powerful Portable AC On The Market!

By Jeanie Wong Platinum Quality Author

If you live in an apartment or condominium, you may have to rely on your building's central cooling system to stay comfortable during the scorching summer heat. However, if this proves to be inefficient or if you're concerned with rising energy costs, you may have to resort to less efficient cooling methods such as ceiling or portable electric fans in order to find respite from rising temperatures. Thankfully, portable air conditioners are the perfect portable cooling solution for areas that cannot accommodate traditional window units such as apartments or even computer server rooms.

Portable air conditioners work similar to traditional central or window air conditioners in that they utilize the refrigeration cycle and a coolant to cool a room or area. However, they are portable, mobile, and do not require any sort of permanent installation. Instead, they consist of a box-like frame that holds both the cold and hot side of the AC along with an exhaust hose to expel heat. Water is removed from the air, and this condensate is either collected in a tray or bucket located within the unit or in more advanced models, even self-evaporated.

When purchasing a portable air conditioner, one of the most common terms you'll see advertised is a unit's BTU rating. As an acronym for British Thermal Units, BTUs refer to a portable air conditioner's cooling capacity, and this can range anywhere from 5,000 BTUs to 18,000 BTUs. The higher the BTU value, the stronger the air conditioner. To get a ballpark estimation of the amount of BTUs you'll need for your room, simply find the square footage of the room and multiply this number by 35.

However, keep in mind that while BTUs are one of the most important factors to look for in an air conditioner, be aware that many portable AC manufacturers often overstate the BTU rating of their units as a way to market their products. Thankfully, in our quest to find the best portable air conditioners on the market, we found the NewAir AC-1600H to be one of the most powerful portable ACs available.

At a Glance:

When we first removed the NewAir AC-1600H from its package, we were quite impressed with its design. Its sleek silver finished complemented our 400 square foot living room's décor, and the unit itself weighed approximately 75 pounds. Rolling casters made maneuverability a snap, while the large, easy-to-read LCD display panel with remote control made operation simple and hassle-free.

Cooling Abilities:

As mentioned above, BTU ratings are one of the most important factors to consider when purchasing a portable AC. The NewAir AC-1600H provided 16,000 BTUs of cooling power - more than many of the units we tested. NewAir recommends this unit to be used in areas 400 square or smaller, but we found that it may have even had the capacity to cool areas slightly larger in ideal conditions (64° to 90° F).

Moisture Removal:

A portable air conditioner's use of the refrigeration cycle also allows it to remove moisture from the air, making it especially great for humid areas. In addition to cooling, the NewAir AC-1600H portable air conditioner also had the ability to remove up to 80 pints of water per day. Moreover, because it utilized advanced auto-evaporative technology, this eliminated the need to empty any water tanks (assuming your climate isn't too humid).

Multi-Functionality:

The NewAir AC-1600H also came with a built-in space heater that offered 16,000 BTUs of heating power. Furthermore, the inclusion of a 3M Filtrete filter removed dust, pollen, bacteria, and animal dander from the air, while the activated carbon filter was able to adsorb odors such as smoke.
Overall, we found the NewAir AC-1600H to be an excellent portable AC that included many advanced features. Best of all, it offers more BTUs than most portable ACs on the market, and its sleek, European design is sure to complement any type of décor in your home.
