That Stinkin' Little Elbow Drain Pipe For My Car AC Condensation

By Bob Cole

First I noticed that the floor on the passenger side was wet, then I started noticing a funny whirring sound when I took a corner and smelled moisture. It seems there was water dripping for somewhere in there and it was hitting the blower fan. The dealer said they could take it off, but they wanted $69 to look at it and it would probably cost $300 to fix. Where have I heard that before?

This particular vehicle is a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer, a small, snappy guy with a crowded engine compartment.

From what little information I got from the dealer, and with some advice from a mechanic friend I decided that there is a little box under the AC evaporator to catch moisture. Attached to the box is a a small elbow shaped hose that lets the water run through the firewall and drip out to the ground. Apparently the little hose was blocked.

I had a very hard time finding the elbow hose. It is only an inch on each leg of the elbow. I found one on my GMC Pickup, where it was quite visible, so I knew what I was looking for. In the Lancer it was well hidden about even with the radio in the busiest part of the engine compartment, but it was there. I pulled it off and got a face full of water for my efforts. It was full of leaves. I can't imagine how leaves got in there, but it was so small it only took 2 leaves to clog it up. I cleaned it out and put it back in place. The problem was resolved.

There is always a BUT: The AC Blower Motor was noisy after that and finally died, months after I unclogged the drain pipe. If I had unclogged the pipe sooner the motor would have probably survived.

It was a painful process, but if I knew then what I knew now it would have been a cinch!
